Random Fun Facts About Me

Would You Have a Beer with Me?

About a month ago, I wrote a blog post about what I do when I am not writing. This post is a follow-up of sorts.

921205_371338002987593_1768069424_oIt feels weird talking about myself, particularly in a confessional mode.

So let us talk about something less weird. Like beer.

Did you know barley was one of the first domesticated grains? Anthropologists believe beer helped create social cohesion and was instrumental in the rise of civilization.

It seems every time there is a presidential election, the question gets asked: “who is the candidate you would rather have a beer with?

I guess it is meant to measure likeability and try to predict who independents are most likely to vote for. With one more week before election day (is it over yet?) I want to pose the same question. Kind of.

Basically, I will list ten random facts about me and see if you would have a beer with me.

So, grab your pint of lager (where is my Medalla?), and let’s sit

down and get to know each other. Ten random facts, I will keep it PG.

(By the way, my safe word is malvavisco).

Ten Random Facts About Me

Ingmar Albizu

  1. I can’t stand airheads. For me, that is the biggest turnoff. Smart is sexy. Dumb is not.
  2. Tamarind juice is my favorite. So is tamarind ice cream flavor. What can I say? I grew up in the tropics. I love tamarind.
  3. I always wanted to jump out of a plane with a parachute. Perhaps I played too much with GIJoe growing up. Or maybe I am crazy.
  4. For some weird reason, I love raccoons. Maybe I was Japanese in a previous life. Or they are just cute. Or perhaps I watched too much Candy Candy anime.
  5. I grew up reading and collecting comic books since childhood, but the Legion of Super-Heroes would always have a special place in my heart. Long Live the Legion!
  6. I am fascinated by Greek mythology. Hercules’ twelve labors, Jason and the Argonauts, and all the other myths. And don’t get me started on the Homeric epics.

Condorito and Mafalda, the two Latino comic strip characters

  7. I adore Condorito. Latin America’s answer to Mickey Mouse is funny, irreverent, and foul-mouthed. His brand of “white humor” (aka, harmless and apolitical) helped him escape censorship from the Pinochet dictatorship and become a beloved icon.
  8. I also love Mafalda. Latin America’s answer to Peanuts is a somehow pessimistic, inquisitive little girl who asks socio-political questions.
  9. I was always jealous of my brother Chander. Because he is tall, humble, and awesome. Forget Raymond; everybody loves Chander. He is everything I wish I was. Shh, don’t tell him.
  10. I collect bookmarks. I used to collect snowglobes, but bookmarks are more practical.

Okay, that was enough about me. I guess I am weird. Then again, most people think writers are weird. But if you run into me, say hello. Introduce yourself. Share a beer.

Who knows? We may have something in common.
